Well, maybe not colonized, but a lot of people went there from the
British Isles for economic opportunity. My father was planning to go
there until he heard of a farmer in Pennsylvania willing to pay the
passage of a healthy hardworking young lad in exchange for a few
years' work on his farm.
I owe my existence to that last-minute change of plan.
