On a trip to Sydney, the plane I was in couldn't land at Bangkok because
the airport was fog bound, so diverted to a military airport about 80
miles away.

There, we waited in a queue to refuel, behind five other jumbos that had
got there before us. Then we waited for a fresh crew to travel by bus
from Bangkok as our original crew had done their allotted hours for the
day.

During all this time the plane was on the runway in 100+ degree heat,
with the window blinds closed to prevent the sun overpowering the air
conditioning and cooking us. We were offered the chance to get out and
visit the airport terminal, but being a military airport it had no
waiting or shopping facilities (or air-conditioning) for passengers.

We eventually took off for Bangkok nine hours later.
