Perhaps the literary reference to Dr. Guillotine's invention escaped you,
it was intimately connected with the Death Penalty in France. It was
used in most executions in the last 200 years in France, however shooting
was also employed from which comes the expression "au poteau". This
method was used on one former French prime minister, Pierre Laval.
