Now I understand what you mean by grayed out.

OK, if you're managing your iPod by automatically syncing, then it won't
let you do anything with the files transferred to the iPod by syncing.
So when you select iPod in the left column, then the song files in it
won't be editable.

But if you set the iPod to be managed manually, you would be able to
select, delete, etc.

Generally, you want the song files on your hard drive to be the master
library, that is, the files you want to modify such as change the genre
or whatever. To do that, make sure you select "Music" under "LIBRARY"
if you want to edit info about a particular song.

Then when you transfer it to the iPod, it'll be the same as the one in
your hard drive whereas if you edit the one on your iPod and later
delete it and then put it back again, the changes you made on the copy
in your iPod from before are gone. So the master copies should be on
your computer hard drive (since it's likely you'll have more songs and
other content on your computer than on the 8 GB iPod).
