Automatic traps in France have a huge advance warning notice about half a
kilometre ahead. If it was one of those, you will get a bill from the car
hire company. If it was a manned trap, you would have been stopped and fined
on the spot. Your UK driving licence would probably also have been
confiscated for that level of offence.

More than 50kph above the limit = 1,500 Euro according to one web site.
Second offence 3,750 Euro and three months in a French jail.

You would not appear to have any grounds to do so, as you admit to driving
at 70kph above the speed limit.

If you paid by credit, debit or charge card, the chances are they will
simply charge it straight to your card. You will have signed an agreement to
let them do so when you hired the car. If you paid by cash, they will
probably employ a UK debt recovery company for that sum of money.
