I'll definitely try that next time I'm out of the country, but in a
martini with dry vermouth rather than with apple juice. (Apple
juice???)

The US Food and Drug Administration is very strict - if a drink has
even trace amounts of anything remotely narcotic, they make it illegal.
Absinthe is still illegal in the US even though it's legal in most of
Europe now. Red Bull wasn't even legal in the US until pretty recently.
