1) Alitalia didn't have anything better, and any other European
airline would have also involved a connection in some other European
airport. Knowing what I know now, I would avoid any connections in
Mexico City. I seem to remember that some of the options I explored
had connections in Miami.

2) The entire cost with taxes was 1010 euros per person.
