The light that never goes out
Tue 09/01/07 - The Flemish Energy Minister Kris Peeters (Christian
democrat) has calculated that the illumination of motorways, regional
roads and tunnels annually cost the Flemish government 10.9 million
euros.
Each year, the illumination of motorways and slip roads, some 750
kilometres in total, costs 40 million kWh in energy. In financial
terms, this equals 3.5 million euros.
There are 1,400 kilometres of regional roads in our region. They
annually use up 50 million kWh or 5.5 million euros.
Finally, Flemish tunnels annually consume some 20 million kWh or 1.9
million euros.
According to Minister Peeters, he has made some important efforts in
the last few years to introduce energy-saving measures.
