Adapters are converters just for current and they are not meant to be
used on a long term basis. Electronic equipment that uses a detached
power transformer like a laptop computer or a router will usually
accept 240 volt 50 Hz current. It will say so on the transformer body;
in that case you only need a plug adaptor or a replacement power cable.
My DELL laptop is so equipped; I had to replace the external
transformer for my my Linksys router, but it works fine. You will
probably want to get a separate keyboard for a computer that
accomodates the French language (AZERTY). The English language version
of Microsoft Office 2003 has a character map that you can access; the
term is "international symbols" Televisions and cell phones in France
are useless, FM radios would work. You will need proof of your Canadian
residency or you will be smacked with an import duty when your stuff
arrives from Canada. A driver's license is no good. The French customs
like a bank statement and and a utility bill with your Canadian address.
