Why not? Frankfurt - Heidelberg - Strasbourg - Titisee/Triberg - Lindau -
Füssen and Garmisch - Munich all have resonably good rail connections.
Travel time for each leg varies between 50 minutes and 3 hr 15 min, with
service every two hours or better. Connections between Füssen and Garmisch
aren't that good and mostly provided by buses, so it may be a good idea to
rent a car in Füssen for easier access to the castles and for the trip to
Garmisch, and using trains for the rest of the itinerary.

Use http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e to get actual timetables
and price quotes. Kids usually travel free of charge when accompanied by
their (grand)parents.

Indeed, they are too near each other to make flying feasible, and many
of them don't even have an airport.
