You really need to drop in on us to see what it's really
like.

The vast continent is underpopulated, yes, but that's not
just because there are only 20 million of us and it's vast.
It's partly because about 13 million of us live in just five
of the cities - Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and
Adelaide. Another million and a half live in the next
echelon of cities: Newcastle, Wollongong, the Gold Coast,
Sunshine Coast and Townsville/Thuringower. We are probably
the most urbanised large population in the Western world.

A proportion of our killings are also in the underworld; but
it's a different underworld in a different culture. An armed
(legally or illegally) private citizen here is a rarity.
That includes all forms of arms, not just guns. When I was a
cabbie I kept a tyre lever down beside my seat - but I was
well aware that the police could give me a hard time if they
chose to view that as a concealed weapon.

Considering those I met on the night shift in Melbourne I
can assure you that the misfits hadn't all moved to the
sticks:-)
