He was gay. Calton Hill is a well-known gay cruising spot.
I read the memoirs of one Edinburgh policeman (Merrilees?) who
blamed the railways. Apparently it's been Sodom and Gomorrah
up there since the opening of Waverley Station in the 1830s.
Gays would come in from out of town and it's only five minutes
walk from the station to a cosy spot under the trees for a quickie.
