There was a thread on rec.travel.europe (so for the curious I crosspost
to rte but assign followup to mtre) about old night trains stopping at
Milano Lambrate.
Now I have one further curious behaviour involving this station.
Next week I'll have to go to Pavia for a walk with a guided tour. The
instructions we've been given are:
- meet at Milano Centrale at 8:20 at the platform where IR 2185 departs
- IR 2185 originates at Milano Lambrate 8:23 (sic ! and why did they
write it ?)
- departure from Centrale at 8:45
So I decided to inquire. It seemed VERY STRANGE to me that a train calls
at Lambrate FIRST and at Centrale THEN, since Lambrate is on the way
from Centrale to Pavia.
As usual the "main" trenitalia site was quite unhelpful (if you do a
timetable query from A to B, and then click on "dettagli" and on the
train number, you see only the stations from A to B even if the train
comes from somewhere else before A and goes to somewhere else after B).
As usual HAFAS was more helpful and provided the wished information (the
same info but slightly less clear could have been obtained via the
trenitalia "viaggiatreno" site).
In particular the "main" trenitalia site shows the train as :
- arriving at Lambrate (from where?) at 08:21
- departing Lambrate at 08:23
- never arriving at Centrale (-- indicated !)
- departing Centrale at 08:45
- going to Pavia without stops
The mistery is solved by HAFAS as follows :
Train originates at Verona as IR2088, and actually calls at Lambrate at
08:21/23 then arrives at Centrale at 08:30, reverses and becomes IR2185
and continues to Pavia-Voghera.
Rather an odd kind of service (Verona-Voghera). I wonder what's the
reason of such an odd route.
Maybe moving rolling stock from one place to another ?
Reminds me of one of the early rides of the "M1 metro replacement bus"
a few years ago. The bus passed near where I live at 05:45 (metro
starts operating at 06:20) but was marked as "limited to S.Babila" (a
place in the centre, only halfway of the M1 route). In fact there the
bus (coming from depot ?) became line 73 to Linate airport. ... and was
a very convenient connection to catch early flights with no change
from my home ! It was a clever move to use the 73 from depot this way.
