Subject: coming soon, our country's Chainsaw Horror Museum, please visit Posted on: Mon, 2 Jul 2007 22:58:43 +0000 (UTC)

We're going to Slovakia in the autumn, so we just got the Bradt
guidebook by Lucy Mallows. It has this lovely little boxed hint:

You are probably unlikely to find American teenagers hitchhiking
around Slovakia this summer. Not if they're film buffs. Most
likely they will still be quivering behind the sofa after renting
the DVD _Hostel_. The low-budget slasher film, directed by Eli
Roth and produced by Quentin Tarantino, was a surprise hit in the
US in early 2006, but Slovaks weren't so charmed by its depiction
of their country as peopled with bloodthirsty . maniacs preying
on innocent young American backpackers abroad. Scenes of the
youths locked in a dungeon somewhere in Slovakia, tortured with
chainsaws and blowtorches and sold to sadists have annoyed the
tiny nation, already exhausted by trying to lure tourists away
from the beaten paths leading to Prague, Budapest and Vienna.
Alzbeta Melicharova, marketimg head at Slovakia's state tourist
board: "It's so sad, the events in the film are so absurd. They
have nothing to do with reality. We are actually one of central
Europe's safest places. It's one of our selling points".
Ironically, _Hostel_ was filmed in the Czech Republic with Czech
actors speaking Czech and finding their way around using
signposts in Czech.

One day this is going to be the stuff of a themed experience.
