I guess they are the best tool against the inflation. The Turkish currency
is not one of the most stable but for short term expediture like during a
few week holiday in the country, inflation hardly hits bad if at all. I
checked one source and in June prices actually were down by a couple of per
mills. The estimate for the overall inflation in the year 2007 is around
8-9%. I guess it makes much bigger an impact than inflation whether one
travels in certain parts of the country off season or peak time. This time
of year hotel rooms are typically pretty much more expensive than during
other seasons. The weekend on 24-26 August will be particularly costly at
least in many hotels in Istanbul due to a Formula One race arranged in town
then. Perhaps Turkish lira has lost some of it's value against the main
currencies smoothing the negative effects of inflation for foreign tourists.
When Mexican peso was pegged to the US currency until the year 1981, the
ratio was about to one to twenty. Since then fluctuation took a good pace
and ratio was 1:200 in summer 1984. In summer 1986 one dollar bought 600
pesos and before the end of that year more than one thousand pesos. No
doubt, the inflation was something over which nobody had control. I cannot
tell did the country become more expensive or less expensive for gringos
during 1980's.
