On the other hand, it is very common for us Americans to believe that the
world would be a much better place if all those foreigners were just like us
and really we know that inside each one there's a little American just
kicking to get out and mow his lawn on Saturday, roast hamburgers on the
grill and drink Budweiser, if only his repressive culture would allow it.

Bringing it back on the topic of travel. I think it's tough for Europeans to
gather why they need to purchase a special health insurance policy when they
come to the US. They just are not used to the concept of having to protect
themselves from the sort of expenses we see. I recently had outpatient
surgery and the gross hospital bill (not including the surgeon or
anesthesiologist) was US$22K. Of this I had to pay about US$700, which I
still thought was high, but imagine what a European would think. My wife
visited the ER in Italy and the bill was about US$36. The same visit in the
US would be a thousand.
