There are about 4 or so car hire firms with pickup/drop off points in the
Piazza Roma in Venice itself, including Avis, which might be useful to know.
There are more, I think, out at the airport.

If you are in the Aus equivalent of the AA or RAC or similar, it might be
worth contacting them and asking who they use in Europe. A couple of years
ago, my radiator died in Italy and it was more trouble to get it fixed than
to get the car sent home. The AA fixed me up with a car for the rest of my
holidays and for the journey back up to the ferry at Zeebrugge where I
handed it in at Brugge. It was through Hertz and there was certainly a bit
of hassle setting it up but it can be done. I don't think it was
prohibitively expensive because we had a budget on our insurance and it was
done well within that. They gave me a locally registered car for the rest of
my time in Italy and, on the way home, I had to call in to Milan Airport and
swap it for one registered in France but it worked out OK.

At the moment, if you are going on holiday to catch the sunshine, you might
do better to stay at home. It is a really crap summer in the northern bits
and it is/was roasting in the south.
