Pete:

Nope.

Ich möchte ein Bier kaufen.
I would like to go and buy a beer.

> Ich hätte gern kaufen ein Bier.

Ich hätte gerne ein Bier gekauft.
I would have liked to buy a beer.

(There's no "I would like to buy a beer" with "hätte gern")

> Ich möchte ein Bier.
> Ich hätte gern ein Bier.

These are OK and have the same meaning AND impact: "A beer, please".
