Sounds like a good plan but you can avoid any backtracking and do it in
1 straight shot. Naples->Pompeii->Sorrento->Positano
I'm assuming you can handle your luggage down 1 long flight of stairs,
*possibly* stand 30+mins on a commuter train and wheel or carry it ~100m
outside?

I *believe*? you are checking the regular trains on trenitalia.com? for
a Naples to Pompei journey which is 25=B1 mins.
Pompei (1 i) is the modern town and not the ruins which I believe is
around a 20min walk from the train station thru town.
What you want to take from Naples to the Pompeii ruins-> (scavi) is a
commuter train called the Circumvesuviana which takes 38 min and drops
you ~50m from the entrance.
This train also continues to Sorrento (last stop ~30min) where you can
catch the bus to Positano.
You can leave your luggage at the left luggage booth next to the
Pompeii ruins ticket turnstiles.
The Circumvesuviana train has its own station in Naples but its 1st
stop is downstairs from the Naples Centrale Train Station and also the
Piazza Garibaldi Train Station.
Below is a post of mine for a Rome to Pompeii daytrip, skip past the
Rome to Naples part to the Naples to Pompeii section for info.
Also read the entire Thread because I and others have added updated
info.
