Thanks to those who have replied (and I would still welcome
suggestions).

My researches, if you can count my unstructured scratching about as
research, suggest to me that the main zones to consider are:
Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz/Mitte, and the Ku'damm area.

I am aware that Berlin was virtually destroyed in WW2, and that it is
now largely a city of modern architecture. Now, I am well able to
enjoy modern architecture, but I have a particular concern: sometimes
I feel that it lacks a human scale, and can alienate me. I have formed
a suspicion that such might be the case around Alexanderplatz and
Potsdamer Platz. Is this a mistaken impression?

Currently I am leaning towards Ku'damm, but nothing is decided.
