They are indeed tightarses, to the point where conversations about how
to save money are met with eery group attentiveness. It's like
boasting that you saved five euro is a badge to wear.
It also means it's a boast to spend that extra euro fifty for table
service is a badge of pride for Ligurians, as is giving some money to
a beggar. Personally I only give when people are not looking, and I'm
not sure why.
Anyway, I'd cordially wish to invite you to a sagra that happens here
regularly, where you don't pay coperto and dine with God...
