There's a bus service from Orio al Serio which takes an hour to central
Milan. That's not bad. It certainly wouldn't put me off, if Milan was my
destination. Ryanair (and others) have been pretty good at identifying
secondary airports for expansion. The Easyjet and Ryanair hubs at
Liverpool are drawing on the north west in general. Thanks to an Italian
bus company, they have made it trivially easy to get from central
Manchester to Liverpool airport, and the schedule accomodates both very
early and late flights. It's around 45 minutes bus ride to Liverpool
airport, and around 15-20 minutes train ride to Manchester airport. The
price is around the same! So, as a result, if I'm flying from where I
live (central Manchester) I'm more inclined to consider price than I am
the airport now. Liverpool John Lennon airport is also small and more
manageable than Manchester airport.
