Paris is not exceptionally expensive as far as European cities go.
There is much more of a range in Paris than in some places - there are
five-star hotels that are $500+ per night and three-star restaurants
that are $200+ per person, but there are plenty of inexpensive hotels
and excellent cheap restaurants also. And once you go outside of
Paris most of France is inexpensive.

One extensive study released in the year 2006 revealed that France is the
most expensive EU country to travel. Some whoppy 20% more expensive than the
neighbouring Germany. There is no such a thing as cheap hotels in France
apart from those Formule One and Etap chain places.
