I'm on your side; given the choice I will always drive for
the flexibility. We left it in the hotel carpark and used
feet or public transport in the bigger cities, but there
were other side benefits even there. For example, in some
places it allowed us to stay well out of town in a pleasant
village on the suburban rail or bus link to the centre,
allowing day trips to outer areas by car with ease as well.
For example we did that in Zbraslav, south of Prague. And it
also gives flexibility when you arrive unknowing in the
middle of a major event and there is no room at the inns in
town. That happened to us when the Pope visited Krakow. No
problem, we stayed in a nice motel in the sticks and had no
problem driving in and finding parking during the day.

However, do check whether parking is available at your
accommodation - sometimes it can be as dear as the room.

One tip - we didn't pick up the car until we were leaving
our start city (Barcelona) and we returned it as soon as we
arrived at our final one (Paris). No need to pay rental or
parking for those periods.
