A few years ago, I remember looking out of a train window and thinking
"there are no leaves on the trees!" realising that I'd been oblivious to
the change of the seasons. Since then, I've resolved to work less, and
enjoy nature more! :)
Anyone in the UK the last month would surely agree that the weather has
been unusually mild and dry. I'm no tree specialist, but I suspect
that's one reason the autumn leaves have been so glorious. I don't
remember an autumn like this since living in the US (where the north
east 'fall' foliage is magnificent.) Usually, I tend to think of UK
autumns as when the leaves go brown for a while and then fall off (my
impression is that certain other parts of Europe get much better colours
as a result of weather, etc.) However, they've been very tenacious thus
far this year, and some of the colours have been incredible. Various
train journeys the last few days over England and southern Scotland have
been a visual joy. Currently on the train from Manchester to Birmingham,
and the view over the cheshire plain is spectacular for colour- though
it's just past its peak now.
A particularly wonderful sight I saw last week was a small glen outside
Dumfries, mostly covered (forested, probably) with evergreens, but then
a narrow belt of gold, yellow and red deciduous trees making a line down
the hill- a 'waterfall' of colour.
Anyway, hope you've managed to catch some of this colour wherever you
are!
