We're somewhat the same. Spend the first week traveling and then
the last 5 or so days in one spot, usually a large city.

This becomes very specific to the particular travel plans, but
yeah I've begun to believe that one ought to just keep moving that
first day and get to a final destination late in the afternoon. The
hotel will be ready, and you'll only have to try to stay awake a few
hours before you can go to bed. Otherwise one has to "fight"
jet lag that whole first day.

I agree. There are numerous exceptions of course, but having to
travel
TO the departure city tends to make for a very long day. Far better
to be AT the departure city. Even at that though, the airports can
be so far out of the central part of town that it is a long travel
just to get to the airport.
