Most of the Indians I stayed with were (though not necesassrily
_practising_) Hindu, Sikh or Christian, and they all seemed to adopt the
same eating practise when using hands- i.e. the right.
But, as George also points out, I did notice it varied a lot- and it
wasn't uncommon to see knives and forks used in some people's houses. I
noticed my driver (in Delhi) would often stop for 'fast food' on the
side of the road, and that was usually dhal (or something like it) eaten
with a spoon.
Eating food with freshly made chapatis was divine. The things called
'chapatis' in restaurants here have no resemblance to the ones I tasted
there... :(
