The traditional advice for those interested in ancient ruins and the
beach is to go to the Yucatan. However, the Yucatan can be extremely
hot and humid, starting as early as April. The Hurricane season is
roughly July to September. I would suggest going before April or after
October.
Another approach would be to spend a week or so in central Mexico for
ruins and modern Mexico, and then head for the beach for a week or so.
One possibility is Oaxaca city and then Huatulco or Puerto Escondido.
Another possibility is Mexico City for ruins and modern culture, and
then go to Acapulco. Remember that Mexico City, although very
interesting, is a high crime area and requires special precautions,
especially about taxis. The climate is a function of altitude, so
Mexico City and central Mexico are not hot, even in the summer. The
beach is likely to be very hot in the summer, although being next to the
water will cool it down a bit.
