I would recommend travelling to Cancun. Do the "circuit" of yucatan.
Hit the beaches around Tulum. Then fly out of Cancun one morning to
Flores, Guatemala. The flight usually is the first one out each day.
Then, explore the "real jungle" the Peten at Tikal national park. You
can do Tikal in a day and spend the night in Flores - Santa Elena near
the airport. It is a nice, quaint town and is safe!!!! Don't freak out
about all the warnings posted in the travel guides of travelling in the
Peten. It is no different than travelling around Mexico. They have
every type of lodging available form$13.00/night to 4 star hotels and
it is "walkable". There are many vans travelling to Tikal park during
the day. The place is great!!!! Pyramids-mayan, different than Chichen
Itza, monkeys, lush forest canopy. It makes a great sidetrip to the
"regular Cancun vacation".
Another great trip was recommended above. Mexico city bus to
Puebla, Puebla, then bus to Oaxaca, Oaxaca- very nice colonial town-
Mount Alban, El Tule and then bus to either Puerto Escondido my
favorite or Huatulco, then fly back to Mexico City.
The state of Puebla, Morelos, and Vera Cruz are beautiful and the
people are just great!!
