The Internet is probably a good bet. Find the tour operators (California
Traveler is one), and see what they offer, then model a solo trip after one
of their packages. I can recommend one place near the Copper Canyon, which
is Hotel Paraiso del Oso near Cerocahui (pronounced Sarokawi). I thought I
had a web address for them, but can't find it right now. We stayed there in
Nov, 2005 to go horseback riding, but there are also a lot of possibilities
for day hikes. Google the hotel name, or the owner "Doug Diego Rhodes" and
you'll find lots of information.
They don't have a phone, but there is a wi-fi hotspot!. It's certainly in
the wilderness, but you can get close to there by train from Los Mochis, and
I'm pretty sure they offered camping as well as rooms. The beauty of the
area is almost spooky.
