Weather close to the water is pretty agreeable even in the summer, but
if you are travelling to Chichen Itza it can be extremely hot and
humid. Nevertheless I agree with most here, that this is where you
should go. Unless you like large hotels I do not recommend staying in
Cancun. Playa del Carmen is much nicer and has retained some of its
Mexican flair, while Cancun is virtually indistinguishable from a
resort area in the US. The best deals in my eyes are cabanyas (not sure
how this is written) - little cabins - in Punta Bete. Punta Bete is a
secluded Beach Area. There won't be large crowds like in cancun and you
can have your own private cabin right at the beach vs. a cement block
at the beach as in Cancun.
