I second Viejo Vizcacha's idea that this situation would be worrisome,
but that has nothing to do in particular with Argentina.
It's ridiculously cheap to call Buenos Aires...I call for something
like 2 cents per minute. Just go to www.1st-usa.com and you should be
able to pick up an 'email-delivered' phone card...I'm not shilling for
the company, it's just what I use.
Argentinian men treat women just fine, from my experience. There are
the annoying "piropos" which are, more or less, the equivalent of
construction-site wolf-whistles here in the States. Otherwise, my
experience in Buenos Aires is that there is a little less of that
male-dominating machismo than you might find in other latin american
places. Of course, it depends very much on the character of the guy in
question, but culturally, I'm not sure there is any more to worry about
than you would with a random American guy.
I think the cheapest time to fly to Buenos Aires is spring and
fall...at least that has been my experience. You're still looking at
$600-$700 minimum, I'd say, although it could be more or less. Go to
Travelocity or Orbitz and do a "best fare" search to get a better idea.
Your daughter, theoretically, could get a job teaching english, albeit
illegally, for a private school. Beyond that, she could work as a
cartonera, I guess.
Best of luck, and I hope this works out...I wish *I* could move to
Argentina...it's a wonderful place.
