This is true for travelling further south in Mexico, but as of the
present time, I have no trouble whatsoever crossing the border between
San Ysidro and Tijuana with just my driver's license and my verbal
representation that I am a US citizen.

Our remaining freedoms as American citizens are definitely under
assault in a variety of ways, but as of the present time, the freedom
to walk or drive from Tijuana to San Ysidro without showing a
government agent a passport or birth certificate still exists. Enjoy
it while it lasts.....
