Best time to go is late November till about end of April.
The SE Coast (Cahuita, Limon) are dirty with the most crime.
Rent a car by all means and buy the insurance.
Gunacaste area is best for beaches. Playa Jaco attracts young travelers.
You'll want to visit Manual Antonio, Aernal Volcano, Monteverde.
Many clean and inexpensive hotels and great inexpensive restaurants.
Buy Frommers Guide to Costa Rica. Best travel book for this trip.
We've been to Costa Rica 5 times. Love it!
