The sig other wants a beach vacation, but I prefer cities/towns with
local culture, and perhaps some river/inland exploration (biking, bird
watching, etc)?

Are there any good beaches near a small/medium size town or village
that this could be done? I've been researching and there's a lot of
good information on Puerto Viejo, people seem to like it a lot

Any recommendations on family run hotels, hostels, or bed and
breakfasts? And how to people usually travel from San Jose to the
beaches? Bus, rent a car? or fly?

Spending about 4-5 days total - thanks in advance!
