In all fairness, Vallarta is not anything resembling a "chickenhawk"
paradise, any more than Costa Rica is. There are those that trend that way,
but most of the Mexican guys I see looking for papis on Los Muertos, are old
enough to make their own decisions. It is a Mecca for gay Mexicans, young
and old, and I've personally known young, gay Mexican and Tico guys thrown
outta the house by abusive and homophobic parents. Where else would they
go? One point is that in latino culture (and here comes a whopping
generalization, but one I've found to be fairly true) there is not the total
and utter obsession with youth that one finds in the US. Economics play a
role in everything, that is not to be doubted, but in general, I've found
young latinos to be much more disposed towards the idea of an older
boyfriend. Most of the young gringo gay guys (and here comes another
whopping generalization, but one I've found to be fairly true) are totally
obsessed with youth and tend to be unbelievably superficial. For example, I
drive in Mexico a lot and my partner is an excellent Mexican painter. This
last trip, we took several works down to a gallery, and everytime we were
stopped by the federales, who are typically 18-20 year-old kids from the
sticks, they were amazed and impressed by the paintings, wanting to see
them, commenting on them to their buddies and then waving us through. I
have never had any of the Border Patrol agents or Customs guys in the US
*EVER* express any interest in art.

There are lots of places in CR, both gay and straight. What I always
found amazing was the vast array of tranny streetwalkers in San Jose.

Absolutely not! I do wish my countrymen were more culturally
enlightened and adventurous. I wish the entire world was more open and less
prejudiced, but as my Mother used to say, "Tell me what you want, and I'll
tell you how you can live without it." But NO! Keeping the the AI and
Walmart crowd out of el centro is *why* they invented Nueva Vallarta.

Again, no, Don. Tourism is a very important part of the economy. With
any industry there are good things and bad things. That's just the way it
is. In a sense, though I find these gringo enclaves stultifying, the are
important and serve their purpose to bring hard currency, which seems to be
the only thing the US has to offer anyone anymore, into their countries.
