The answer depends on your tastes and a couple of other factors. If
you're planning on staying in Mexico on tourist cards the import duty after
your $50 each personal exemption is 32.8%. If you're planning on getting
temporary resident cards you can get an exemption on your household goods.
If you're considering this option I would check with the Mexican consulate
before buying anything.
Buying in Mexico would be a lot less hassle and, with careful
shopping, you can probably get some nice stuff for something not to far from
Ikea prices. There are quite a few small companies producing good looking
furniture in the region. IIRC there's at least one in San Carlos. I would
expect to find some in Hermosillo. Further down the coast there are a number
of small companies producing wood furniture along the highway from Mazatlan
to Durango as you go toward the mountains--not too far from the coast and
well before you get up into the mountains. They're easy to spot from their
displays of ready made furniture along the highway. Be prepared to do some
serious haggling, in many places Americans are generally regarded as rich
and not too bright. In the regular retail shops in Hermosillo you'll
probably pay the marked price unless you're buying a lot of stuff in one
place.
