Lots of southern Californians drive their cars into Mexico, as do people all
along the border. What's important is having the insurance that Mexico
requires, which is insurance issued inside Mexico, not a Mexico rider on a
US policy. You will also have to pay a bond fee (up to $400) which you will
get back if you leave the country in the same car you arrived in and don't
go black-marketing it.
You can find the detailed information you need at
http://www.mexonline.com/drivemex.htm.
Mexican roads are pretty darn good in populated areas, and on the main
travel routes. Also, Mexican drivers are generally skillful (though not all
are courteous). Try to plan your trip to make the leg out from Mexico City
to Acapulco on a Sunday afternoon, and the drive back on a Saturday morning,
otherwise you'll be in a Los Angeles style jam. Driving in Mexico City
proper is not advised unless you're highly adventurous, but the highways
around the city are just highways.
Get a good map and be fearless.
An option is to look into the extensive Mexican bus system. I'm not
familiar with the entire route system, but your friends in los algodones
should be able to help you find a bus from there to Acapulco. You'll want
first class, which is a fine way to travel.
If it were me, I'd load up the old van with kids, toys, bags and a cooler
and hit the road. I don't know how long you have, but if you can spare the
extra day, take three days to get there and more breaks along the way to see
things. You can drive thru on the way back, because everyone will be
anxious to be there.
As a question for you, are your frequent trips to Los Algodones for dental
care? If so, how does it stack up for quality of care and price against
where you live?
