I stayed in the Mira Flores area when I was in Lima and it felt much safer
then the center of town.
I don't know what your travel pace is, but if it's your first time to Peru,
in addition to Machu Picchu, there is of course, Cusco... and also
Ollantaytambo and Pisaq are interesting.
One thing I regret not doing (due to lack of time) was seeing Lake Titicaca.
Also, I noticed in Lima, that there was a tour offered at the airport that
does a flight over the Nazca lines.
