There are very little ways as you seem to have found out.

In fact, most airlines routings show a flight to LAX then to NZ.

What you need is a good travel professional i.e. a travel agent who
has access to many combinations/prices.

There are other ways of doing it:
Aerolineas Argentina have a code share from Santiago [SCL] to Buenos
Aires, [EZE] then a direct flight to Auckland [AKL]

Have you looked at code shared flights where-ever possible?
