No, Mexico is nowhere near as dangerous as many Americans seem to
think it is.

There are dangerous areas, as with any country. But the resort areas
in Mexico are very safe, and you are more likely to run into trouble
in many of the US's larger cities than you are in a Mexican resort
city. On your first trip to Mexico, you would probably want to avoid
huge population centers like Mexico City, for example.

Mexico's Mayan Riviera is a great place that you are extremely likely
to enjoy, and very unlikely to have trouble in, unless you are very
intent on finding trouble. (If you really want trouble, you can find
it pretty much anywhere...)
