Re: Is Mexico Dangerous to Visit? Posted on: Tue, 23 May 2006 18:00:50 -0500

Chris:
Mexico, especially the area you'll be visiting, is very safe. Just use
common sense, don't get drunk as skunks and wander the streets after
midnight.

Some parts of Mexico City can be dangerous late at night, just like any
big American city. Again, the common sense rule applies, and don't flag
down roving taxis there. There are taxi "sitios" at many corners with
registered cabs, or if you're at a restaurant you can ask them to call a
radio taxi to take you back to the hotel. This rule really doesn't
apply to the Riviera Maya nor any of the old colonial capitals such as
Oaxaca, San Miguel Allende, Puebla, Guadalajara, etc., or the other
beach places. In my opinion, you're almost not in Mexico, although the
RM is lot's better than Cancun, with real Mexican towns.

Great food (seafood especially), great people and lots of fun. Please
enjoy yourselves. I've been going since 1961, and we're going to Oaxaca
for my 65th birthday this summer. I'd be happy to make some suggestions
for your next trip.
