Yes, we also would recommend Valdivia.
Have a look at a map and you will realise just how central it is to tha Lake disrtict and not far from Chiloe either.
Methinks the train still does the o/night journey Stgo to Temuco, then buses during the day.
Had a week in Valdivia in 2000 and enjoyed it.
