Well, about the discount sites, I have never used them, but about the
rest of the question:
Most hotels would have a tour representative stand with schedules and
prices, you pay your ticket there and the bus picks you up at the hotel
door, yes there is some time involved in picking up and delivering
people but it is quite organized after all.
All tours groups have english speaking guides (some speak several
languages), groups will be formed mostly from north americans
europeans, and asians and a few mexican and latinamericans.
About driving yourself, you can rent a nice car or 4x4 and go anywhere
you want, without any rush, just get a few good maps in advance, you
would need to know a few spanish phrases at least.
