Our experience is that it is easy to book day tours in Mexico. You can
book them through the hotel or through a travel agent.

I do not believe that it is necessary or advantageous to book tours
before you arrive in Mexico. I suspect that it is cheaper to book them
in Mexico.

However, if you decide to rent a car, be sure to book that in advance,
to get better rates. The Yucatan is a relatively easy place to drive,
in our experience, especially compared to some other parts of Mexico.
Your lack of Spanish makes driving yourself a little less attractive,
but should be doable.

If there are only two of you, it is likely to be cheaper to take tours
rather than rent a car for the duration of your trip.
