We rented a car last time in Cancun. I chose not to pay for insurance and
the rates were very good, something like $34 a day. But later, after getting
back to the US, I discovered that if the car were stolen I would be liable
for the full cost of the car and my US insurance nor my American Express
card would be of any value. I would be responsible for the full amount. The
fully insured rates bring the rental fee up to about $90 per day. You can
use a lot of taxis for a small percentage of this or go bus for pennies on
the mile.

Even though both of us speak Spanish, we often use the day tours because of
the convenience and security they provide. We rented the car because our
resort was close to Playa del Carmen, halfway between Xcaret and Cancun and
we had stuff to do in both places. Great highways everywhere. Lousy signage!
