I understand that American Express does provide coverage in Mexico if
you rent the car using their card. Is there a limitation that I do not
know about?
In fact, based on your comment, I spoke to American Express. They
routed me to the department that handles that the car insurance, and the
lady assured me that I would in fact be covered. There were a few
qualifications, such as reserving and paying for the rental with
American Express, 30 days maximum, no exotic cars, turn down the
collision damage waiver from the rental company, etc. If you were going
to count on that insurance one would want to know the details of the
coverage, and any exclusions. They also assured me that I would be
covered in case that the vehicle was stolen. This coverage is valid in
most countries, including Mexico. (Not valid in Israel, Ireland,
Australia, etc.)
So what is your source for believing that you were not covered in
Mexico? Was there something special about your rental that disqualified
you from this coverage?
