If you must *swim* with the dolphins please do it somewhere else. The
pens there were orignally built for mooring small boats. They're too shallow
for the proper care of dolphins.

Get a guidebook or two, rent a car, most of the major companies have
agencies in the area, I've used Avis and gotten good service, drive yourself
instead of being part of a herd. As Richard notes it's a relatively easy
area to drive in. The Cancun to Tulum highway is modern and quite nice, even
if driving customs take a bit of getting used to. It's one of the few
highways in Mexico I don't mind driving at night.
