That is correct. Central American food has its roots in Mexican food, but
still varies some. For example, in Nicaragua aside from regular tortillas
there are guirillas (sp). Which are processed differently and are more
tasty, especially when you eat them with creame cheese (queso de crema).
The tamales are different too. They are bigger and have pork, potatoes,
green peppers and rice inside them. Venezuela has something very similar,
though smaller, called ayacas. Both are very tasty, but bad for your
cholesterol. Tacos in Nicaragua are different than what we are accustomed
to in America. They are a tastier version of flautas. I don't know if they
have flautas in Mexico. In Colombia they have their own version of
tortillas which are called arepas. Not very tasty, imo. Venezuela has
arepas too but are not like tortillas. Venezuelan Arepas are still made
from maize but have a pouch where you can fill them up with anything you
want. A lot more tastier than Colombians, especially the Full Equipos. The
carne asada is very different and a lot more tastier in Nicaragua than any
other place in Latin America except Argentina. But, if you like the gallo
pinto and mexican style dishes then a Nicaraguan asado beats the Argentine
asado hands down.
El Salvador has pupusas, but I don't know how they are made or if they are a
version of torillas. Last time I had one was in 1978. Also, Nicaragua and
Costa Rica beats any Latin American country in tropical fruits.
