Around Jan 3, 2004 we traveled from Puerto Montt to Hornopiren by bus
(5 hours) from Hornopiren, there is a daily ferry to Caleta Gonzalo
(Parque Pumalin). From there, it is two hours by bus to Chaiten.
(Although I would highly recommend spending some time in Parque
Pumalin).
The only problem is that Jan 3 was the first day the ferry started
running. It was run by Navimag, the same company that does the 3 day
Puerto Montt - Puerto Natales run. They do respond to e-mails.
There is also a ferry from Chaiten to Chiloe. (Probably run by navimag
as well). I don't know if it is seasonal only or runs more regularly.
